Speakers- Abstract and Biography::: Pietro Zennaro – Biography Pietro Zennaro is an Italian artist, architect, designer, philosopher. He studied architecture at the Iuav University in Venice and holds a MSc in philosophy (aesthetics), from Padua University. He is currently Associate Professor of Building Systems Design and Technology of Architecture at the Iuav University and Technological Innovation for the Building Envelope at the Milan Polytechnic. Since 2008 is Head Investigator of the Iuav research group “Colour and Light in Architecture” of the research panel “The Paysage Project”. Previously taught at the Phd course of the Faculty of Architecture, Ferrara University; teaching staff at: Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Universität Karlsruhe (TH) Institut für Baugestaltung, Baukonstruktion U. Entwerfen, at Institut Supérieur d’Architecture Saint Luc de Wallonie, Liège, and Ecole d’Architecture de Tolbiac, Paris. Was also Co-Founder and vice-director of the Industrial Design diploma and Member of the Steering Committee of the Industrial Design degree course, Faculty of Design and fine Arts, Iuav University of Venice. ::: Kristina Schinegger – Analogue Effects The kinetic media façade is an integral part of the Thematic Pavilion, a major and permanent building for the Expo 2012 in South-Korea. The building inhabits the „Thematic Exhibition“, an introduction to the Expo’s theme “The Living Ocean and Coast”. The aim of the design was not to represent but implement the Expo’s agenda through a sustainable climate design and the bionic principle of the kinetic media facade. As a moving, emotional experience the kinetic façade combines sensations with the sensational, while communicating the Expo’s theme in an innovative and investigative way. As a counter part to the virtual multi-media shows of the Thematic Exhibition taking place in its interior exhibition spaces, the bionic façade like the overall building emphasize the manifold potentials of analogue architectural effects. The lamellas operated in a basic mode fulfil a conventional climatic function and enable the control of light conditions in the interior spaces. Individually actuated by a screw spindle that is driven by a servomotor, they create animated patterns along the façade. The potential choreography spans from subtle local motion to overall waves affecting the whole length of the façade, creating an astonishing imagery out of the building’s architectural layers. After sunset the analogue visual effect of the moving lamellas is intensified by linear LED bars, which are located at the inner side of the front edge of the lamella. In opened position the LED can illuminate the neighboring lamella depending on the opening angle. The material performance of the bionic lamellas produce an interrelated effect of geometry,movement and light: The longer the single lamella – the wider the opening angle – the bigger the area affected by light. Kristina Schinegger- Biography Kristina Schinegger studied Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. She founded soma with Stefan Rutzinger, Martin Oberascher and Günther Weber in 2007. She received several awards including the Austrian Building Award 2005, the Recognition Award for Experimental Tendencies in Architecture 2006 and the MAK Schindler- Scholarship 2008. ::: Jan Knippers – Deployable Façade Systems Based on Plant Movements – The Kinetic Façade for the Thematic Pavilion of the EXPO 2012 in Yeosu The architectural concept of the Thematic Pavilion of Expo 2012 shows a kinetic lamella facade which responds to the change of ambient conditions. Convertible systems in architecture are usually based on the combination of stiff elements or soft textiles connected with hinges. New construction materials such as fibre-reinforced polymers allow large and reversible elastic deformations and enable us to think about a completely new interpretation of convertible structures. In nature, plants have evolved a multitude of kinetics based on elastic deformation without any hinges to serve the opening and closing of flowers, leaf orientations etc. Some of these kinetic principles may be used as concept generators for technical applications. The design process of the kinetic facade of the Thematic Pavilion of EXPO 2012 in Yeosou serves as a model for advanced biomimetic research, development and design: from selection and investigation of plant movements to several levels of abstraction until a feasible technical solution was developed, which transforms the architectural vision of an adaptive and smoothly swaying facade into built reality. The first step of a biomimetic process is to formulate a concise question which nature might have already had to develop an answer for. In this case the screening of reversible elastic plant movements and selection by the criteria of large bending radii, small actuation energy and avoidance of local hinges led to the decision to have a closer look at the petal of the Bird-of-Paradise, which has evolved an asthonishing pollination mechanism. When a bird lands on the petal to feed on nectar, it bends the petal down and the pollen is exposed to the birds feet. The complex movement of the petal was first transformed into a pysical model and then adjusted by several steps of abstraction to the geometric, functional and physical conditions of the Yesou project. The facade for the Thematic Pavilion of Expo 2012 covers in total a length of about 140 m,a height between 3m and 13m. It consists of 108 kinetic lamellas, which are supported at the top and the bottom edge of the facade. The facade had to be designed for the very high wind speeds at the South Korean coast. The wind loads were derived from wind tunnel tests. The lamellas are made of glass fibre reinforced polymers (GFRP), which combine high tensile strength with low bending stiffness, allowing for large reversible elastic deformations. The 13 meter long curved lamella has a maximum thickness of 9 mm only and is stiffened on one side by a longitudinal rib. The complex elastic deformation is induced by a small vertical compression force at the top and bottom support. The entire system is bus-controlled which also allows a synchronisation of the actuators. A computer addresses each lamella individually within a specific logic of movement, choreographies and operation modes. The maximum opening of a 13 m lamella takes about 7 seconds. In case of very high wind speeds the façade will be closed and locked automatically in a parking position. Jan Knippers – Biography Jan Knippers studied civil engineering at the Technical University in Berlin. After several years in an international operating consultancy he founded with Thorsten Helbig Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering in Stuttgart (2001) and New York (2009). In parallel he is professor and head of the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design (itke) at the faculty for architecture and urban design at the University of Stuttgart. :::    Marc Maurer – Indemann – Icon for ‘Eutropolis’ In the municipality of Inden, in Germany, there is a brown coal open cast mine and in order to excavate the mineral resources several entire villages were relocated within the municipality. The mine currently covers an area of 4,500 hectares and excavation has created an unusual landscape. This scene will change after 2030 when the excavation work stops since the site will be transformed into a large area for water sports and other recreation called ‘Der Indische See’. The municipality Inden wanted to erect a watchtower and landmark at this location. Maurer United decided on using the shape of an immense, 36 m tall robot: the Indemann. The Indemann’s design is characterised by its striking external appearance, but the real surprise lies in the staged experiences that the visitors can expect in its interior. The public experience the building as a composition of architectonic experiments, with tremendous overhanging elements, surprising transparencies and, for example, accessible grid floors in the outstretched robot arm 18 metres above the ground. In addition to this the front has had 40,000 LED’s incorporated into it. This is the first Illumesh® façade to be realised on this scale in Europe and it works like a folded screen and can have animations projected onto it. In this way the watchtower creates a true lighthouse effect when it’s dark. Since its completion the building has come to be seen as a ‘Wahrzeichen der Region’: a landmark for the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, which is also known as ‘Eutropolis – the heart of Europe’. The watchtower alongside the A4 motorway between Aachen and Cologne unites ‘Dutch Design’ with ‘German Efficiency’. With this design Maurer United not only refers to the giant excavators but also marks the transition from an industrial to a media- based era. Marc Maurer – Biography Marc Maurer is architect and urban planner. Together with his partner Nicole Maurer he founded ‘Maurer United’ in 1998. They are known for investigating and redefining the borders of the architecture design-field, resulting into urbanism, architecture, design and media projects on various scales. Their office is based at the central railway station building of Maastricht. ::: Christian – On the shoulders of an illuminating giant The Indemann is a landmark for the evolution of an entire region – the Indeland. By day, observers stand on the shoulders of this great giant and gaze upon a landscape shaped by surface mining and that is set to undergo a significant structural modernization process over the coming decades. By night, the giant shines over the region for the people – much like once the underground miner with his pit lamp – and thereby becomes a mediatectonic symbol for the social revival of a non-urban space. The location has turned into a place of interaction where people of all ages come together. What function is to be fulfilled by this installation and its media content display? Which operating models can be developed?
