The first Media Architecture Biennale took place October 7th-9th in Vienna. It brought together an exhibition, a conference and a series of workshops, with over 200 international participants from the fields of architecture, informatics, design, lighting, and others. The theme of the Biennale 2010 was „Urban Media Territories; the re-stratification of urban public spaces through digital media.”

Keynote speakers and international panellists addressed this topic in their talks and discussions. For example Kas Oosterhuis, Professor at TU Delft, discussed the new aesthetics for the new kind of building. Ludger Hovestadt, Professor at ETH Zurich, spoke about the architectonics of the city beyond geometrical order. Maria Aiolova from Terreform ONE + Terrefuge presented their visions for strategies that would allow people to fit symbolically into their natural surrounds. The Biennale went beyond previous events organised by the Media Architecture Institute in London and Berlin, putting a much stronger emphasis on theory and conceptual approaches of media architecture. It also acknowledged the fact that information technologies are claiming urban space beyond media façades. For example, Norbert Streitz, scientific director of the Smart Future Initiative, discussed the development of the city into virtual/digital hybrid cities to smart cities, leading to the vision of a humane city.
The workshops focussed around practical issues of building media facades to scientific challenges regarding research in this area. Two of the workshops were organised by Sydney-based researchers in the field of media architecture – Hank Hausler, Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney ran a workshop on voxel facades that explored the transformation of media facades into 3D displays; Martin Tomitsch, Lecturer at the University of Sydney, organised a workshop with international speakers to discuss challenges around designing interactions with urban screens.
The exhibition brought together 40 of the most relevant projects from both commercial as well as scientific realms, such as Green Pix (Simone Giostra & Partners), the Yas Hotel (Asymptote Architecture), the Cloud (raisethecloud), Urban Pixels (MIT Media Lab, Smart Cities Group), and Polymedia Pixel (UTS, sense-aware and urban aid). In addition to posters and models the exhibition featured a number of physical prototypes and installations. The central pieces were an invited installation by Adam Somlai-Fischer and the BoxLEDs developed by realitylab.at – an interactive wall of 300 stackable Euronorm boxes equipped with traxon LED units. The BoxLED installation featured different types of content –videos by Catherine Ludwig, an interactive Pong Game developed by Christoph Pacher, and a responsive visualisation showing the behaviour of visitors within the exhibition space. A Sydney-based team of four Design Computing students in collaboration with the Media Architecture Institute developed a digital catalogue for the iPad. Sixteen iPads were featured in the exhibition acting as pixels when not in use and thus serving as physical extension of the BoxLED façade. Visitors were able to take an iPad onto their journey through the exhibition to browse additional information and content about the exhibited projects.
The Biennale was organised by the Media Architecture Institute. The conference and workshops were curated by Oliver Schürer (Vienna University of Technology), the exhibition was curated by Gernot Tscherteu (realitylab.at) and Martin Tomitsch (University of Sydney).

Call for Participation
CHI 2011 Workshop on Large Displays in Urban Life – from Exhibition Halls to Media Facades
Submission DL 14th of January 2011

http://largedisplaysinurbanlife.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/

The goal of this one-day CHI 2011 workshop is to cross-fertilize insights from different disciplines, to establish a more general understanding of large interactive displays in public urban contexts, and to develop an agenda for future research directions in this area. Rather than focusing on paper presentations, this workshop aims to trigger active and dynamic group discussions around the following topics:

Beyond Playful Interaction

A number of studies found that large display installations invite for playful interaction but often fail to convey meaningful experiences related to content. This raises the following questions:

    * How can we design installations that endure people’s attention past the initial novelty effect and direct the interest toward the content?
* What design strategies can be applied to promote an active individual and social exploration and discussion of the presented information?

Character of Interaction

A number of interaction techniques have been explored for large displays in public spaces ranging from interaction via cell phones, to direct-touch or full body interaction. We would like to discuss:

    * How do different interaction methods shape people’s experience of large display installations in urban spaces?
* How do interaction methods differ from each other in terms of triggering interaction and engagement with the presented content?

Evaluation

Different quantitative and qualitative methods have been applied to evaluate people’s experience and use of large display installations in public spaces. During the workshop we would like to discuss:

    * How can we evaluate the “success” of large display installations in urban spaces?
* How can particular aspects of public large display installations such as engagement be evaluated?
* What kind of evaluation methods are most effective in different progress stages (design phase/installment phase)?

We see this workshop as an opportunity to start thinking about a general framework that can inform the design and evaluation of large interactive displays in different urban contexts. With a diverse research community present at the workshop we hope to come up with an agenda for future research directions in this area.
=======Submission details==========

Submit a position paper (maximum 4 pages) to largedisplaysinurbanlife@gmail.com by January 14, 2011 using the CHI extended abstract format. The paper should describe experiences, works in progress, or theories around designing and/or evaluating large interactive displays in public urban settings. We plan to explore approaches and insights from different disciplines to this topic so submissions from art, architecture, design, HCI, media theory, and social science are highly encouraged. We welcome all methodological approaches and techniques centered around the topic of large interactive displays in urban life.

At least one author of each accepted position paper needs to register for the workshop and for one or more days of the CHI conference itself.
======= Organizing Committee ===========
* Uta Hinrichs, University of Calgary
* Nina Valkanova, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona
* Kai Kuikkaniemi, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology
* Giulio Jacucci, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology
* Sheelagh Carpendale, University of Calgary
* Ernesto Arroyo, Universitat Pompeu Fabram, Barcelona

=======Schedule===========
Submission Deadline: January 14, 2011
Notification of acceptance: February 11, 2011
Workshop: May 7 or 8, 2011 (final date to be announced)

Mr Helmut Bien initiated the Luminale back in 2000 and realized the festival for the first time in 2002. The Luminale – Biennial of Lighting Culture is an international festival of lighting culture taking place every two years in Frankfurt am Main and the entire Rhine-Main region.

1. Mr. Bien, the Luminale is already a well established institution in the
area of light art. Can you tell us about the origins of the festival?

In 2000 the lighting industry tradeshow moved from Hannover to Frankfurt.
Michael Peters from Messe Frankfurt asked me for an event concept that
should connect the city of Frankfurt with the new tradeshow called Light +
Building. For the days of the fair Frankfurt should become the meetingplace
for the whole world working with light. Not only the specialists and the
industry but also the creative people, the architects, designers and artists
and also the inhabitants and normal consumers should be involved. The idea
was to create a transdisciplinary festival about lighting and energy and the
qualities of urban living. Frankfurt should become a laboratory to see a
wide range of approaches with light.

2. How did you personally came in touch with light art and what motivates
you to take all the effort to organise such an event?

In the late 80ties i worked in Berlin as a curator (Berliner Festspiele) and
in this time i made my first professional experiences with light, the
scenographic power of lighting. The idea to realize an exhibition about
lighting followed me since these days. Luminale was the chance to show this
power of light to change atmospheres and to re-organize spaces. I am a
little bit romantic in the classical sense of the poet Novalis. He explained
that the romantic idea is to give normal things a new and higher meaning.
Lighting design gives us the possibities to enchant the world. My friends of
the scenographic agency Skertzò in Paris called themselves 'engineers of
dreams'. That is also my personal motivation. And on this way i am enjoying
it to discover people, engineers, designers, artists who are working on the
same project. That creates the spirit of Luminale.

3. Compared to other light festivals, what do you think makes the Luminale
a unique event?

Since 2002 when we started the first edition of Luminale, it is a great
success. A lot of people tried to copy the concept of the festival. Some of
these festivals are important for the local people, some are made to promote
the tourism, but the unique position of Luminale is the combination with the
most important trade fair of the lighting industry. Luminale is the festival
for the specialists and the local people. Luminale is well-known in the
worldwide community of lighting enthusiasts and specialists. So Luminale is
a pole position for careers of younger designers and artists. There are some
festivals much bigger than Luminale. But at the end of the day you have to
count the heads not the legs. Also Luminale is very popular but not a mass
consumption event with coloured buildings looking like sad clowns. The
unique combination with the trade fair gives Luminale the possibility to try
new technologies and approaches and to give a chance to the un-known. The
Media Facades Summit was such a project within Luminale.

4. What are your plans for the Luminale 2012 in terms of content and size.
Is it still possible to top 2010?

The digitization of light is a fascinating subject. The storytelling with
light is a never ending challenge. Media Facades, Vjing, Projections are
great themes. On the other hand the questions of energy reduction, recycling
and sustainability. The third dimension is the development of the urban
life. The skyline and nightlife of Frankfurt are the stages of Luminale.

5. What are your biggest wishes and dreams for the long term development of
Luminale

The biggest wish is that Frankfurt and the whole region accept light as one
important dimension of its identity so that we can realize projects not only
for the short time of the festival. A masterplan for the whole region with
landmarks, light art, a green "balancity" which produces and consumes energy
in a way that enrichs the qualities of life.

To celebrate London as a centre of design and innovation, the ‘Digital Architecture London’ Conference will take place at the Building Centre on 21st September 2009. Presenting a selection of London’s leading architects, artists, designers and engineers, the conference will examine how London is shaping the digital future of the built environment. Introducing the latest developments in digital design practice, the conference will explore new spaces, social interactions, design and fabrication processes, and speculate on architecture’s post-digital futures. DAL09 is directed by Ruairi Glynn with the support of London Digital Week, The Building Centre, Arup & The Bartlett School of Architecture.
