7 World Trade Center

The new 7 World Trade Center will launch the symbolic representation of the spirit of redevelopment and renewal in Lower Manhattan. A slender glass pylon making both the entrance to the World Trade Center and the future of New York’s downtown.

The stainless steel spandrels of the first 7 stories of the building are modelled to catch reflected sunlight that is coloured to match the tone of the sky. The spandrels will appear as bright, iridescent bands of reflected colour. Through simple manipulation of metal rods in profile, orientation, finish and density, the surface is animated as both a reflective and porous surface.

When the wall is activated, its evening glow will change in a sequence from tranquil, patterned fields of blue and white to more active modes: at times, the wall will follow passers-by - or at least, 12 motion-sensing cameras will.
The sensors are randomly programmed to follow pedestrians on the sidewalks, creating multi-storey, moving columns of blue light on a white background as people pass the building. Sometimes two pedestrians heading in different directions will each be highlighted.
